Communication Officer

Job Location: Kathmandu

pas works globally with a vision that every woman and girl has the right and ability to determine her own sexuality and reproductive health.
As part of the broader reproductive justice movement, Ipas is working to ensure that abortion and contraceptive care are essential health services and that all people can access them. Our programs use a multifaceted approach that addresses reproductive health services, access to services, and fulfillment of reproductive rights. We seek to expand the accessibility, availability, acceptability and quality of abortion and related reproductive health services, as well as improve the enabling environment for the sustainability of RH services.
Ipas Nepal’s program intervention prioritizes intersectional partnerships that integrate into the broader gender equality and social justice, including gender-based violence prevention and response, women-led climate justice and disaster risk reduction.

The Communications Officer works under the direct supervision of the Program Development and Communication Specialist. The Communications Officer will lead communications activities and strengthen the communications mechanism, process, and portfolio of the organization.

Detailed duties and responsibilities for the position

Communications Policy, Strategy, and branding

  • Develop, revise, and implement Ipas Nepal’s communication policy, strategy, and branding guidelines for its visibility, promotional, and fund-raising materials both online and printed materials to meet the needs of the organization.
  • Update, revise, adhere and mainstream the communications policy of Ipas Nepal.

Communication and documentation

  • Design and update Ipas Nepal’s annual report, fact sheets, brochures, publications, and other Information, education, and Communications (IEC) materials to highlight Ipas Nepal’s achievements, and progress.
  • Update and maintain Ipas Nepal’s communications channel including website, Facebook, and online social media sites.
  • Update and maintain the communications database and portal of Ipas Nepal.
  • Translation of communications and knowledge content (Nepali and English).
  •  Plan, collect, and design case studies, photo stories, and video stories.
  • Development of campaign and advocacy tools and materials.
  •  Plan and conduct various campaigns, advocacy, lobby, and knowledge-sharing programs together with the program team.
  • Designing and conducting emergency communications for humanitarian emergencies.

Capacity strengthening, support, and coordination

  • Periodic orientation and capacity strengthening of staff on branding guidelines, communications policy, and strategies.
  •  Support Ipas Nepal staff in developing a communications plan and program.
  • Lead and coordinate with Global Brand Champions of the Ipas network.
  •  Coordinate internally and externally to amplify communications of Ipas Nepal.

Mainstreaming Gender Transformative and feminist approach

  • Perform as a gender focal point for the organization.
  •  Integrate the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) policy of Ipas Nepal in the communications process and outcome of Ipas Nepal.

Media Relations

  • Monitor and report on media mentions.
  • Support relations with media houses and journalists to position Ipas positively for press articles.

Understand and comply with the organization’s policies and ethics

  • Understand and comply with the Human Resources, Procurement, Travel, Finance Policy, and other policies of the organization.
  • Commitment and adherence to the Ipas code of business ethics and conduct and safeguarding policy.
  • Contribute to a safe working environment where every team member is treated equally and respectfully.
  •  Live up to the Ipas core values-driven, principled, bold, and interdependent.
  • Ensure all work activities comply with the organization’s rules and regulations.
  • Ensure proper documentation of memos, decisions, reports, and any official documents for record keeping hardcopy/OneDrive/Luna as appropriate.

PSEA compliance

  •  As an Ipas Nepal employee read, understand, and sign the acknowledgment to comply with all aspects of the PSEA as defined by the PSEA policy.
  • Contribute to a safe working environment where every team member is treated equally and respectfully.
  •  Ensure Ipas representatives (including consultants, interns, volunteers, independent contractors, suppliers/vendors, board members, and sub-awardees) and government officials directly working with Ipas and its partners understand and practice the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse policy while in partnership and implement the program with Ipas.

Other responsibilities

  • Engage in a learning culture and participate in and enroll in learning courses at Ipas University.
  • Willing to be back up for staff and vacant positions and perform other related duties as required.

Qualification and skill requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a reputed University in Media studies, mass communication, journalism, gender studies, social work, and other relevant subjects with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Excellent command of Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Premiere, and video editing tools.
  •  Proven skills in photography and videography and technical operations related to communications.
  •  Knowledge and conceptual understanding of sexual, reproductive, and health rights, (focusing on safe abortion and contraception), gender-based violence, climate justice and Social and Behavior Communication Change (SBCC), and Humanitarian emergencies.
  •  Experience in program development and knowledge management is an asset.
  • Very good analytical, speaking, and writing skills (Nepali and English at least).
  • Familiarity and commitment to rights-based and gender transformative approach.
  •  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including familiarity with visibility, branding, and communication.
  • Passion, enthusiasm, and interest on Ipas vision, mission, and strategies.
  •  High quality of professional integrity and commitment.
  •  Willing to travel to project districts on a regular basis.
