Background:

The primary objective of the Construction Manager is to ensure the successful and timely completion of the school construction project while adhering to high-quality standards, safety regulations, and cost-effective measures. The specific objectives include:

1. Oversee the construction activities of community school buildings in rural areas of Nepal.
2. Ensure compliance with Nepal National Building Codes, local regulations, and construction standards.
3. Monitor and manage the construction process to ensure the project stays on schedule and within budget.
4. Maintain effective communication and coordination with project stakeholders, including local communities and government officials and within the organisation.
5. Ensure the safety and security of the construction site and all personnel involved.
6. Provide technical expertise and guidance to construction teams.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Construction Manager will be responsible for the following tasks:

1. Conduct site visits to assess the feasibility of proposed locations for community school buildings and ensuring required documentations are prepared after the visit.
2. Collaborate with architects and/or engineers to review and approve construction plans, ensuring they meet design specifications, regulatory requirements, and local conditions.
3. Prepare detailed construction schedules, cost estimates, and material specifications for the project.
4. Supervise construction activities to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, and applicable building codes.
5. Monitor project progress, identify potential delays or issues, and take necessary actions to mitigate risks.
6. Form Construction Coordination Committees in all communities where UWS builds schools to ensure community participation and enhance ownership at the local level.
7. Coordinate with local authorities, community members and stakeholders to obtain necessary permits, clearances, and utilities for the construction project.
8. Provide technical guidance and support to contractors and construction teams, including resolving technical queries, facilitating effective construction practices, and promoting quality workmanship.
9. Monitoring and controlling resources and overseeing the spending of money.
10.Conduct regular progress meetings with stakeholders to ensure effective communication and timely resolution of issues.
11. Ensure proper safety measures are implemented and maintained on the construction site.
12.Conduct inspections and quality control checks to verify adherence to construction standards and specifications.
13. Keep accurate documentation of all construction activities, including site records, measurements, change orders, and as-built drawings as defined in the UWS Construction Manual.
14. Prepare weekly progress reports and provide updates on project status, budget, and any deviations from the original plan.
15. Ensure the project is completed within the agreed timeframe and allocated budget.
16. Facilitate the handover of completed school buildings to the relevant authorities.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognised institution / CTEVT certificate in the related field.

Experience:

  • 3 years of experience in the supervision of construction work;
  • Demonstrated relevant practical work experience in the field of construction;
  • Candidates from the local area will be given preference.

Technical requirements:

  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, Google Suite, etc.);
  • Working knowledge about computer-aided drafting software like AutoCAD or Archicad etc.

Other requirements:

  • Experience of working in remote areas of Nepal.
  • Two-wheeler driving license.
  • Prior experience of working with national and international non-governmental organisations is desired.
